Corporate Training

The East Melbourne Language Centre has been successfully conducting tailor-made business classes for companies in Melbourne over a period of 30 years. Special technically and commercially-oriented courses concentrate on teaching business people to communicate effectively and confidently with native speakers and also to understand work-related correspondence and reports written in the target language.

Our courses systematically develop the participants’ speaking ability, aural comprehension, and reading and writing skills using progressively graded texts and a variety of online materials which can include online lessons. We supplement these methods with concrete examples based on the particular needs of the company. We provide detailed course outlines after in-depth discussions with one of your representatives.

Our school has been conducting these fine-tuned classes for major German and Australian companies such as Kaufland, Siemens, Bosch, Miele, Nextgen, Lander and Rogers and several Government departments.

The number of hours per week depends on the particular circumstances of the clients, taking into account factors like urgency, the required level of language proficiency etc. If students require long-term training, it is our experience that classes should run at least once a week for a two-hour session. With this format it takes about 12 months to complete the Elementary program, provided participants put in another 2 hours per week for homework. At the elementary level students are able to carry out basic communication in every-day situations.

We also specialise in teaching on a one-on-one basis to maximise results for the specific needs of the students. We are happy to provide a more detailed course-outline, once we know the aims and expectations of the company. The approach, the text and the materials used in a short course are quite different to those used in a long-term course.

Early morning sessions (e.g. 7.30-9.30am) have proven most successful as participants are usually still fresh and not as pre-occupied. The class size should never exceed 12 students. Our current hourly rate for a group with minimum 5 students is $185, plus GST, for classes not held at our Centre. We charge a travel expense for classes which are outside of a radius of 10km from our Centre in East Melbourne.

Private tuition costs $95.00 per hour on Zoom for one student, $110 for two students, $125 for three students.

We are certain that our Centre has the skills, expertise and experience to provide you with quality training. If you have any further queries, do not hesitate to contact us on 9417 2265 or [email protected] for further clarification. We look forward to hearing from you.

Cultural Awareness Programmes

A. Partners programme

Problems may range from general stress due to the upheaval to more serious dissatisfaction due to the partner’s isolation in the new environment. Frustration of not being able to master a language quickly and understand its culture can be devastating; not knowing anyone to share this frustration with during the day even more so. At the East Melbourne Language Centre we provide a forum where partners of new employees from abroad can learn Australian English in the context of it’s country and culture. Groups are small enough to provide plenty of individual attention and the language is learnt using a fast track communicative approach. This approach empowers the student to cope with various everyday situations immediately and gives the opportunity to meet other people in a similar situation. If you have hired employees from Europe or Asia this year, we would like to provide you with a useful service and with good long-term bonuses for your company.

B. Employees programme

This program aims to resolve the problems that arise from differences [both obvious and subtle] between two cultures. An awareness of cultural values is a critical element of effective communication at the workplace. One recurrent misconception is that Australian and European cultures share the same values. Our course will identify typical areas of cultural misunderstandings and provide techniques for overcoming them.
