1, 2 (Beginner) | At Level 1 you are an absolute beginner. At Level 2 you may have done 15 hours of tuition as an adult or two years at high school some time ago. | You will gain a basic range of simple expressions about personal details and be able to handle practical situations such as meeting people, planning outings and getting about town. | A1 |
3, 4 (Elementary) | You may have studied the language a long time ago (up to year 10 or so) and may be a bit rusty now or you have recently done 30 hours of tuition as an adult. | You will have acquired the vocabulary and grammar, including the past tenses, enabling you to deal with everyday situations such as social exchanges and shopping. You will be able to talk about your interests and routine matters. | A2 |
Pre-Intermediate | You may have had a good command of the language some time ago and you want to re-fresh your skills in the written and spoken language (a rusty year 12 level). | You will have enjoyed a thematic approach in which you will have covered a wide range of topics adding more vocabulary and simultaneously will have continued to complete your knowledge of the grammar. | A2/B1 |
Intermediate | You are at post-year 12 or 1st year university level and currently have a reasonable command of the language and wish to improve on finer points of grammar and fluency. | You will have completed all the grammar and will have practised it in conversation organised around a wide variety of themes giving you confidence and fluency. | B1 |
Upper Intermediate | You have a very good working knowledge of the language and you are now particularly focused on improving your conversation skills on a wide range of topics. | You will be able to keep up in discussions with native speakers understanding and responding with a broad range of vocabulary, including colloquialisms, and be able to apply any of the necessary grammar. | B2 |
Advanced | You have a very good command of the language and wish to continue improving fluency to near-native language skills. | You will have a excellent command of grammar and a broad range of vocabulary and be able to speak fluently using idiomatic expressions and colloquialisms. You will be able to have discussions on any topic. | C1 |
